Soul and R&B Bass Lessons London

Soul and R&B bass playing is built on feeling, trust and understatement. It is the discipline of making music feel deeper without drawing attention to yourself. The great soul and R&B bassists move music by anchoring it with warmth, patience and pocket — not with volume or complexity.

If you are drawn to that kind of playing — where one well-placed note can lift a whole choir or make a groove suddenly feel expensive — these lessons will help you understand how that effect is created and how to reproduce it with authority.

We teach adults exclusively in an environment that is focused, quiet and respectful. Whether you are brand new to the bass or already working in rehearsals, studios or live bands, we will guide you toward a sound and a feel that musicians immediately recognise as soul and R&B.

Black man playing bass on the stage

From classic soul to modern R&B — the disciplined groove and placement that make records sound finished.

Perhaps you want to create that irresistible laid-back feel heard on D’Angelo records, deliver warm, song-serving lines in a gospel-inspired setting, or refine the elegant pocket required for neo-soul and modern R&B productions. Whatever draws you in, your lessons are tailored to your taste, your pace and your goals.

You will learn to:

  • Craft supportive, vocal-informed bass lines that breathe and sing
  • Sit behind, on or ahead of the beat with intentional control
  • Use harmony and silence to shape a deeper pocket — not just notes
  • Develop a right-hand concept for buttery, warm, mix-fitting tone
  • Gain the maturity to contribute with confidence in sessions and live bands

Instruction is centred on clarity and musical logic, ensuring that your growth is not merely conceptual but becomes audible in your tone, timing and phrasing — the kind of improvement that translates directly into real-world recording and performance contexts.

Cool bass player jamming

Our bass lessons for adults take place weekly on a fixed day and time at our central London studios, located in both the City of London and the West End.

You may choose between 30, 45, or 60-minute lessons, and you can enrol at any point during the year.

With lessons available on weekdays up to 22:00, as well as on Saturdays, please contact our manager Stefan at enrol@londonbassinstitute.co.uk to arrange the most convenient day and time for your course.

All our bass lessons are tailored to your personal goals and needs. You are also welcome to prepare for ABRSM or Trinity examinations if you wish, though this is entirely optional.

We do not follow a rigid syllabus; instead, we adapt to each individual, as every student deserves dedicated attention.

We ask for an initial three-month minimum commitment, as a shorter period would not allow for meaningful progress. After this, your bass course continues on a rolling monthly basis at your chosen day and time.

If you would like to stop your course, we simply ask for four teaching weeks’ notice. You can give this at any time once you have completed two months of lessons, so that the initial three-month commitment is fulfilled.

You are also welcome to book additional intensive or focused lessons to accelerate your progress, or to prepare for a performance or examination.

Should you wish to arrange longer weekly sessions, such as 90 or 120 minutes, please let us know and we will do our utmost to create a course that meets your requirements.
